How to cook brown rice

Brown rice is one of the best accompaniments for which we can choose. It is perfect with meat and fish, also offering a good dose of fiber necessary to improve our intestinal transit and keep blood sugar and cholesterol levels under control. Steps to follow:

1. Brown rice is an excellent and healthy alternative, however it is important that you know that its preparation requires a little more water than conventional white rice. In addition, it takes longer to cook because the whole grain is a bit harder. Despite this, it is worth the wait to enjoy a delicious plate of brown rice, which, because it is a complex carbohydrate, is much healthier and more beneficial.

2. Before cooking the brown rice, it is advisable to soften it a little, in this way the grain will be much softer and more delicious. You can do this by letting the brown rice rest in a container with cold water for 45 minutes.

3. Choose a pot large enough to prepare the brown rice. Remember that the grain is three times its size, so it is important that you choose a spacious pot that does not stick and has a lid.

Heat two tablespoons of olive oil in the pot and, once hot, add the cup of brown rice. Stir for a few minutes. This will help soften the grain if you haven’t left it soaking in water, and also add more flavor to the rice.

4. After a couple of minutes you can add the 2 1⁄2 cups of water or vegetable broth. Remember that this measurement is for each cup of brown rice, so if you intend to make more than one you must double the amount of liquid.

Add a teaspoon of salt and stir in the rice. Raise the heat until the liquid comes to a boil.

Once the liquid has boiled, turn the heat down and cover the brown rice. Let cook over low heat, brown rice usually takes between 40 and 50 minutes to be ready.

You will know that your brown rice is cooked when the grains have absorbed all the liquid and appear puffy and soft. Always taste brown rice before turning off the heat.

5. Once you have finished cooking the brown rice, let it rest covered for about 5 minutes, so you can serve a much more appetizing and softer rice. Enjoy!
